It's a festival of lights that signifies the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Diwali usually lasts for five days, and each day holds significance with its own set of rituals and traditions. Here's a brief overview of the Diwali festival:

  1. Day 1: Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi):

    • It marks the beginning of Diwali festivities.
    • People clean and decorate their homes.
    • Purchasing gold, silver, and utensils is considered auspicious on this day.
  2. Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali):

    • Also known as Choti Diwali or Roop Chaudas.
    • People apply oil on their bodies before taking a bath to symbolize the cleansing of evil.
    • In some regions, it commemorates the defeat of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna.
  3. Day 3: Diwali (Lakshmi Puja):

    • Main day of Diwali.
    • Homes are illuminated with diyas (oil lamps), candles, and decorative lights.
    • Lakshmi Puja, the worship of the goddess of wealth, is performed in the evening.
    • Fireworks and the exchange of sweets and gifts are common.
  4. Day 4: Govardhan Puja (Padwa):

    • Celebrated to honor Lord Krishna's lifting of Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers from Indra's wrath.
    • Also known as Annakut Puja, where devotees prepare a mountain of food offerings.
  5. Day 5: Bhai Dooj:

    • A day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters.
    • Sisters perform aarti for their brothers and apply tikka on their foreheads.
    • Brothers give gifts to their sisters as a symbol of love and protection.

Diwali is a time for family gatherings, feasts, the decoration of homes and public spaces, the exchange of gifts, and the bursting of fireworks. The festival is not only celebrated by Hindus but also by Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and the triumph of good over evil. The exact customs and traditions can vary across regions and communities.
